Spell Saab

I got a lot of people asking me how I lost weight and slimmed down for my wedding. My plan was to go all out intense training at the gym 2 months before the wedding. Then I badly sprained my ankle last Dec. 20 so my gym plans disappeared. It’s a good thing I was on Diet Diva‘s program for months prior to January so I gradually slimmed down – I didn’t want to do anything crazy like go an all liquid diet or something. I probably would have gone batshit bridezilla if I deprived myself of food. Hahaha! Here’s exactly how Diet Diva helped me quickly shed pounds without having to starve myself.

Just for reference and because I’m a good sport (hehehe) here’s a photo taken back in Tokyo, a day before Jim proposed to me 8 months before the big day. Look at how tight my dress was (and how horrible my hair looked in Japanese weather haha).

Also, here’s another one of me and Maxx meeting with my official wedding photographer J Lucas Reyes back in April.

Ika nga ng Instagram commenter na si iloveashsy (kung sinuman siya) I looked like a pregnant…

IMG_7168

a pregnant what???

Now we know why people assumed I was getting married because I got knocked up. Apparently, I had packed on a few pounds. UGH. Although I didn’t want to look totally unrecognizable and be stick thin on my wedding day, it was important to me that I looked like myself.

The article and interview below originally appeared on Stylebible.ph and was written by Marj Ramos.

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind whenever you hear the word “diet”? Because this we’re sure— it’s definitely not “eating healthy.” On the contrary, most girls feel that going on a diet means not eating at all. For some reason, we have this twisted ideology about losing weight, but we’ll save you the trouble of going through the phase of chewing and spitting by breaking the news to you now: This is not how a healthy diet works.

dietdiva2

Not so long ago, Saab Magalona walked down the aisle looking immaculate in a pink Sassa Jimenez frock. Now, we already told you all there is to know about her punk inspired wedding dress, but what you guys probably don’t know yet is how she slimmed down in order to achieve that perfect fit. And nope, she didn’t starve herself to death.

dietdiva3

So, how exactly did Saab manage to shed off those pounds before her wedding day?

dietdiva4

Here’s her answer: A balanced diet.

While regularly working out and keeping herself committed to her fitness goals, Saab also sought help from Diet Diva, a 1200-calorie diet delivery service. Lucky for you, we had a chance to chat with its owner, Kakki Teodoro, and she shared with us how our most recent celebrity bride paved her way to a slimmer body a few weeks before her wedding day. Want to know Saab’s secret? Read on and find out.

You’ve been preparing meals for Saab Magalona. Can you tell us more about her fitness goals and what she wanted to achieve in particular?

Saab has been a Diet Diva client since 2014. She basically just wanted a simpler yet effective way of eating healthy and losing weight. After the engagement, Saab then shared with us that she wanted to lose more weight and to look great in her wedding dress while maintaining the same energy level she needs for her busy days.

Knowing her fitness goals, how did you make it happen for Saab? Tell us about the diet she was into.

Saab subscribed to our bestselling 1200 calories-a-day program called “Active Diva” which focuses on calorie-counting and portion control. This is what Diet Diva pioneered in 2012, changing the dynamic of diet delivery services in the country. With Diet Diva, Saab was able to enjoy delicious food, and without realizing it, she started losing weight week after week.

How were her meals “tailor-made” for her?

Two months before the wedding, we started minimizing her rice portion, and it was cut to half. We increased fiber in her diet as well. A month before the wedding, we completely replaced rice with healthier carbs like boiled plantains and sweet potatoes. This way, since Saab is carb-sensitive, there are no energy dips! Two weeks before the wedding, we reduced her calorie intake from 1200 to 1000, and kept meals nutritious and delicious so she could maintain that healthy happy glow for the big day.

Her food posts on Instagram looked so good we almost couldn’t believe she was on a diet! Did she mention her favorites?

Her favorites include Breaded Fish Fillet on Sweet & Sour Sauce over Brown Rice or Sweet Potatoes, Lean Beef Caldereta, Pork Tenderloin, Thai chicken with Basil leaves with Organic Red Mountain Rice, Bangus Fish Fillet, Pork Tapa Breakfast, & Tuna Teriyaki with Potato Marbles.

Chubby or slim, “you’re still pretty, witty, and bright. And I pity (ehem, iloveashsy) any girl who isn’t you tonight.” Haha.

I admire your discipline. I have a hard time staying away from chocolates & sweet pastries. If I may ask, what do you eat during in between meals? Do you allow yourself to indulge in any cravings especially when it’s the “time of the month.”

When it’s that time of the month, yeah… Hahahha! Pero in moderation pa rin. I’ll allow myself chips today but I won’t the rest of the week. Gets? Also I drink a lot of water and tea in between meals :)

Honestly, your weight and body built, I think is normal. I don’t see you as fat or chubby. You’re proportional namen eh for your height kaya it’s not a problem. Just exercise daily and eat the right amount of food every day then you’re good to go. :)

Hallo, Saabydoo!! I know this post is from the fairly recent past, but I only just read it now. Pardon me, but my comment has nothing to do with the post. I would just like to take the opportunity to say that one of the most common mistakes made is to use “built,” when referring to a person’s body frame.

The word you want to use is actually “build.” It is a noun referring to the person’s physique.

I think most people hear the phrase “he/she is BUILT that way…” or “boy! That guy is BUILT!” and assume that that is also how to use it to describe body types. In this case, it is used correctly; as a verb in the past tense.

I say this with all the love and good intentions, and not to ridicule. I hope people will learn from it. <3
        Thank you,
        Mommy Pia

          Hi mom!

Yes, I’ve always known that! A lot of people, even classmates from Ateneo say “built” rin instead of “build” I was starting to think I was being barok by saying the right term. Hehe. Thanks for pointing it out for everyone here to see! :) Through the years I’ve just started not commenting on some of my readers’ grammar because I’m afraid it might scare them away. But I guess it would help to correct them too since they point it out when I have typos and such on my blog posts. <3

I am very skeptic about diet delivery services. :( I am worried that if my meal for the entire day is cooked and delivered in the morning, it might not taste as good as it should in the evening. I could be wrong. It looks like you enjoyed it. Might give it a try!

Hi Patricia! It’s super good!! Just keep it in the fridge or an insulated bag when you’re going out. You’ll also have to reheat it before you eat of course. It’s not unheard of to cook all meals in the morning for later consumption! Some people even prepare their food for the whole week and keep it in the fridge or freezer. Not everybody has the luxury kasi to cook and eat fresh off the stove! So keeping food in the fridge for later reheating is super normal :) Give it a try!

Hi! I honestly didn’t think you needed to lose any weight before the big day because you’re curves are amazing–diet or no diet. But I know us girls just want to look like our best self especially on our wedding day, so we end up going the extra mile to achieve it. I just wanted to know if you felt any loss of energy while you were on a diet? I think 1200 calories is way too low to fuel your everyday activities, and cutting it down to 1000 calories just a few days is a little intense. In your experiences, was cutting that many calories out of your diet a healthy thing to do, and did you get long-lasting maintainable results? Thanks!

Hi Jana! I didn’t feel any drastic loss of energy. I’m still on a 1,200-calorie diet and I haven’t had any problems with it. I even work out regularly. Since I work out though and this means I’m burning even more calories, Jim makes me a protein shake for post workouts! Sometimes I forget to drink a protein shake when Jim isn’t around and it’s not a big deal rin naman. I think it’s all about proper balance naman. If it’s 1,200 calories made up of 2 600 calorie burgers then of course that’s gonna be really bad for you. But a balanced diet of greens, proteins, and the right carbs (for somebody carb-sensitive like me), is perfect for weight loss or maintenance :) As you can observe, I have been maintaining my weight naman :) It was just difficult right after the wedding because we ate so much during our honeymoon in Japan hehe pero pagbigyan niyo na, honeymoon naman eh :p I think the thing I need to cut off again now is beer and alcohol. When I cut that off before the wedding, I noticed how fast I lost weight rin. I was on antibiotics kasi weeks before my wedding so I really laid off alcohol. Nagkataon lang. Hope this helped!

    Hallo again, Saabster <3

This time, my comment is about your post…
I just want to say that in real life, it wasn't so noticeable that your curves were not in the right places, and that you were admittedly physically unfit before the wedding.

I'm glad you took it upon yourself to take control (because "we can only control ourselves,") and find the right combination of how you could get yourself in the best shape possible, by just having the discipline to reach your goals.

Not only did you achieve your right shape, but you also matured because of this (having self-control is a sign of maturity), and I'm very happy for you. Now, you think more clearly, you are happier and not argumentative anymore. [Peace!] In fact, you are now even more active and productive!

We can therefore conclude that a lot of a person's negativity comes from being unhappy with one's self. Hence, I hope your dear readers can pick up that there are so many benefits to gain from having a healthy lifestyle, working along with others (aka teamwork) and just really liking yourself!

I love you forever… yes, may forever!
