Spell Saab

A frequently asked question from my readers: what tattoos do I have and what do they mean? So here’s a post dedicated to explaining myself and my tattoos.

Our parents told us we had to wait until we were 18 to get tattoos. You don’t hear that often because the usual parental guide to getting inked is, “IF YOU GET A TATTOO, IDI-DISOWN KITA” hahaha!

Here’s a backgrounder on my only 2 tattoos:

3 STARS & A SUN

DSC06136

I was tattoo-free until late 2008. I found out my then-boyfriend had cheated on me so I had one of my friends, Danni, pick me up and we went to a tattoo shop and both got tattoos on the spot. What a friend, Danni. Who does that for a friend?? I love Danni. She got a horse shoe tattooed on her nape since she’s an equestrienne.

Anyway, I thought about what my dad (who was already sick with leukemia at the time) would have done to the guy if he wasn’t bed-ridden. He always joked around when I was in high school that he would “break the legs” of any guy that would hurt me.

I got a smaller version of his 3 Stars & A Sun tattoo. It’s to remind me that he will always have my back no matter what. He is with me forever and it will be up to me to choose my partner carefully. As you can tell, it worked <3

GRADE SCHOOL LINES

DSC06140

For my 21st birthday, I got lines from a basic grade school notebook tattooed on my forearm. It’s to remind myself to keep writing and to keep my life simple and fuss-free. No overthinking, no backstabbing, no bullshit. Go back to your grade school self and just play, learn, and have fun.

I think I’m done with tattoos for the meantime. My mom’s also begged me and Maxx to stop already. Hahaha!! So I’ll probably get a tattoo only if she agrees to get a matching one with me. Or maybe I’ll get one of a heart that says MOM so she can’t get mad. Lelz.

Saab

Hi Saab! I also have a tattoo dedicated to my Dad (who also past-away). I got a heart tattooed to the right side of my chest with his nickname on it. I got it on his birthday a few days before graduation. People would ask why not on the left cos that’s where the heart really is.. and I’d tell them “b’cos my heart is on the right path”.. chos! They would always assume also that it’s a name of an ex or the recent boyfriend. Lol. Anyway, love your blogs keep posting! xx

Love this article! Plus your grade school lines tattoo. Same idea for my Mom! Hahaha. So she won’t get mad if I’ll have another one. By the way, I had my first tattoo last December, I’m already 28… with parental consent, of course! :)

Hi Saaaaaab! :) please blog naman about your college life experience. From the entrance exam days, till knowing you got in, why you picked the course, and how it was applying for a jobs. How was Ateneo for you? Ang dami na nag sabi sakin na mahirap mag hanap ng job for CW graduates eh, though it’s the least of my concerns rn. Thank you! :)

Hi Bea!! Unfortunately I can’t help you with the whole job application process because I have never applied for a job!! Because of my work as an actress I never had the chance to go corporate. Writing jobs were offered to me by friends who worked in different publications but I think they read my stuff online. I recommend building an online portfolio while you are still in college because writing jobs require sample write-ups and such, I imagine! I took up Creative Writing with the end goal of working for a magazine, FYI :)

I was never a fan of tattoos. But after my dad died, I got one saying “tatay” in baybayin. I realized death robbed me of that word forever so I had it permanently inked.
